A strong earthquake with a seismic intensity of lower 6 on the Japanese scale hit Osaka in western Japan on Monday morning, leaving five people dead and many homes without water or gas. A concrete wall collapsed and killed a 9-year-old girl on her way to elementary school.

The prime minister said on Sunday that the government decided to accept transportation support from US forces following two deadly earthquakes in southwestern Japan, which killed at least 41 people.
